Criss-cross bird island in a kayak

experienceKids Friendly

L’île aux Oiseaux is a tongue of sand stuck in the middle of the Arcachon Bay. A timeless place where a few houses of fishermen, still intact, subsists. The place, of rare authenticity, is still preserved: the ferretcapiens (habitants of Cap Ferret) often prefer the Banc d’Arguin. What’s less known is that this haven of peace is also equipped with small natural canals that zigzag across the island and it’s very original to discover it by kayaking. Have your boat delivered from a rental in Cap Ferret (there’s one in the village, l’Herbe) or Arcachon, and pass a more peaceful day in this magical place, with a view, far, on the shack (cabanes tchanquées), houses on stilts is symbolic of the Basin. You can swim in the delightfully warm water from the small port, chat with fishermen who retain a shack on the island and come spend the night time to time, bask on the only and unique small beach of the island. It’s deserted and the fineness of the sand competes with those of the Maldives.

A state of life nearly wild, touches another world, that of stars who flock to Cap Ferret or Arcachon. Here’s a way to discover the Basin differently, with only this noise of waves and aigrettes…
